Best Diversified Bank Stocks To Own For 2014

Most of the time when someone says "hindsight is 20/20", it's said with a hint of regret or lamentation - having access to more information would have been helpful, given the outcome. In the case of Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), however, the fact that hindsight is a 20/20 affair confirms something exciting that was already being alluded to. That exciting something for PHOT and shareholders? The organization is on the verge of a major expansion.

Those familiar with PHOT will say the clues started to materialize back on July 18th when the company hired Randy Breitman to fill the newly-created position of Director of Business Development. The "new hire" theme was underscored yesterday when Growlife named John Genisi as the new CFO. Both gentlemen are tops in their respective arenas, and should provide the corporation with outstanding service. Those aren't the first glimmers of a serious expansion for the company, however.

    LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD  )
I'll admit it, I would much rather have been buying shares of LinkedIn when it was around $160 earlier in June. But the market -- and I-- has no qualms about paying a premium for a company that could disrupt HR departments of companies worldwide.

Yesterday's villain was a big miss by Citigroup (C) before the open. Today doesn't look a whole lot better for the sector because, after the close on January 16, American Express (AXP), Capital One (COF), and Sallie Mae (SLM) all reported significant earnings misses. American Express came in with fourth quarter earnings of $1.21 a share versus a consensus projection of $1.25. Capital One reported $1.45 a share instead of $1.57. And student loan company Sallie Mae announced 61 cents a share versus the analyst consensus of 73 cents a share.

Sallie Mae (NASDAQ: SLM  ) will be keeping its quarterly dividend steady at $0.15 per share.

The financial services company has paid this amount to investors sinceMarch 2013, after upping the amount 20% from $0.125. Sallie Mae's latest payout will be paid on Dec. 20 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on Dec. 6.

    Supply and demand
Of course, there are plenty of interested parties who want the student-loan business to continue to grow in some form. Student-loan specialist Sallie Mae (NASDAQ: SLM  ) as well as big banks that make student loans earn substantial profits from their loans, and federal guarantees greatly reduce the risk that lenders take on with some loans, making the absolute level of interest rates much less important for certain types of lending.

Oil prices were also lower, weighing on the U.K. oil firms. Shares of Royal Dutch Shell PLC (UK:RDSB) (RDS.B) gave up 0.9%, BG Group PLC (UK:BG) shed 0.4% and BP PLC (UK:BP) (BP) lost 0.2%.

Using this alternative payout ratio has saved me from a few situations in which the traditional payout ratio indicated that the dividend was covered - only for the company to later declare a dividend freeze or cut when the free cash flow ran out. One specific example is Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), the global oil behemoth.

I do not mention these things to discourage you from international stocks. I have been purchasing BP (BP) between $39-$43, and I will eventually purchase Anheuser-Busch (BUD), Nestle (NSRGY.PK), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), and two or three other international companies when the stars line up. My point is that you should not feel an obligation to own international stocks simply for diversification's sake. If you find a good international stock with a business model you understand and it trades at an attractive price, then great. You should buy it. But owning international stocks does not have to be a necessary part of your strategy. Despite what Mankiw advises in the New York Times, you can build a diversified collection of "global stocks" simply by investigating where certain American multinationals generate the bulk of their sales and earnings.

Monro Muffler Brake (MNRO) is a popular name in the DIFM & Services segment, while Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack (PBY) is a hybrid of DIFM-DIY. The present perspective seems bright for such aftermarket service providers. However, these two are entirely different from aftermarket retailers such as Advance Auto Parts (AAP). Let us take a look at the present aftermarket scenario and its prospects.

What's interesting, though, is that historically, auto-parts makers are seen as relying on the lack of success among automakers. After all, new cars don't need parts nearly as often as older cars do, and when Ford and GM perform well, their customers don't have to rely as much on Genuine Parts or competitors AutoZone (NYSE: AZO  ) and Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP  ) for replacements. Yet, even though Advance's 15% gain, and AutoZone's 20% rise year to date, aren't quite as substantial as Genuine Parts, they still signal a paradigm shift in the way investors look at the industry, perhaps recognizing that for every new car sold, there's usually a used car that gets traded in, and so good news for Ford and GM sales might actually translate into more business for the parts industry.

Investors really like Advance Auto Parts (AAP) deal to buy a chain of repair shops–so much so that a stock that finished yesterday in the low 80s is now trading in the mid-90s.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Reuters has the details on the deal:

Advance Auto Parts Inc will buy 1,418 outlets of the Carquest chain to boost its auto repair operations to complement its car parts business, sending its shares up as much as 20 percent to a record high.

Advance Auto, which sells products such as batteries, air fresheners and engine parts, said it would buy General Parts International Inc for just over $2 billion, creating the largest North American retailer of auto parts.

General Parts is the biggest operator of the Carquest chain, which runs auto repair shops and car parts stores. General Parts also owns Worldpac, the No.1 supplier of replacement parts for imported car and truck brands.

Reuters notes that the finished product will be the largest supplier of auto parts by sales, just beating out Autozone (AZN).

Credit Suisse analyst Simeon Gutman and team call the deal a “smart strategic acquisition.” They write:

The acquisition would solve two important issues for AAP. First, it has struggled in the DIFM segment, primarily due to a weaker and less accessible distribution network. General Parts has one of the most established distribution networks in the country (~40 DCs vs. AAP’s 10) and long standing relationships with mechanics nationwide. More importantly, WORLDPAC (estimated $1 billion in sales) is the leader in foreign parts with AAP owning the number three player and we see synergies from AI flooding into WORLDPAC.

A meaningfully positive aspect of the transaction is targeted annual cost savings of roughly $160 million within three years (~6.1% of acquired sales). This seems relatively consistent with previous DIY Auto deals. The deal is expected to be 20%+ accretive to FY 14 ca

Rather than pull my money out at the wrong time, as so many people did, I invested in specific trend-bucking, low-beta stocks -- O'Reilly (NASDAQ: ORLY  ) , Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP  ) , and AutoZone (NYSE: AZO  ) . I did so while following Lynch's advice to "invest in what you know." To allow me to tell my story, let me briefly explain what the beta number is and how it works. Then I'll tell you why I picked those stocks and explain how you can do it next time.
