LONDON (The Deal) -- European and Asian stocks rose Monday as it looked increasingly likely that the new chairman of the Federal Reserve will keep monetary policy looser for longer after former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers withdrew his candidature. Summers' retreat leaves Federal Reserve Vice Chair Janet Yellen, who is perceived to be more dovish than Summers, in pole position for the job.
A weekend deal between U.S. and Russia about how to tackle Syria's chemical weapons was seen as taking the Western world further back from the brink of military action in the civil war-ravaged country.
The Hang Seng closed up 337.13, or 1.47%, at 23,251.41, while the Nikkei edged 17.40 higher at 14,404.67. In Germany, the Dax by late morning was up 100.82, or 1.18%, at 8,610.24. A decisive victory for the right-of-center Christian Social Union in weekend state elections in Bavaria boded well for Chancellor Angela Merkel's allied Christian Democrats in national elections on Sept. 23, even though Merkel's minority coalition partner, the pro-business Free Democrats, performed badly in the southern German state.

The first thing to realize about StoneMor is that arcane and flexible accounting rules make it important to dig beneath its GAAP earnings. Growth throughout the industry has been substantial, as up-and-coming Carriage Services (NYSE: CSV ) continued to stay on pace for double-digit sales growth as it rapidly expands its reach. Even well-established player Matthews International (NASDAQ: MATW ) managed to grow revenue by nearly 14% in the quarter that ended in March, although its earnings fell slightly from the year-ago quarter. Still, StoneMor's sales haven't been able to rise as quickly as its peers, with its previous report including just a 6% gain in revenue.

Small cap robotic stock Adept Technology (NASDAQ: ADEP) has put in a very good performance this month verses its immediate peeriRobot Corporation (NASDAQ: IRBT) as well as against medical robotic stocks like MAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO), Accuray Incorporated (NASDAQ: ARAY) and Hansen Medical, Inc (NASDAQ: HNSN). I should also mention that we have recently added Adept Technology to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio (we are up 9% since last week) because we feel robotics is an improving sector as companies aim to reduce overhead and improve efficiencies through machine to machine (M2M) automation.

Intuitive Surgical's stock has been battered by worse-than-expected third-quarter results, which included the first year-over-year quarterly revenue decline in company history, coming on the heels of an underwhelming second quarter this summer. Fool contributor Rupert Hargreaves notes that the FDA's initiated an investigation on Intuitive's da Vinci surgical robotics systems, after it found several discrepancies in its incident reports. As a result, quarterly sales of the da Vinci declined from 155 units to 101 units, a drop that can only be partly blamed on slowing demand for medical devices in the U.S. Intuitive may have underperformed compared to recently acquired MAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO ) and Accuray (NASDAQ: ARAY ) over the past year, but it remains the 800-pound gorilla among these industry peers.
