Top 5 Shipping Stocks To Watch For 2014

United Parcel Service named Chief Operating Officer David Abney as its next CEO to replace Scott Davis, who will remain chairman.

The changes come at a time of intense competition in the industry. The Wall Street Journal explains:

Meanwhile, competition in the shipping industry is likely to increase as a number of retailers likeAmazon.comInc. (AMZN) andWal-Mart StoresInc. (WMT) test their own delivery networks.FedExCorp. (FDX) likely added fuel to that fire when it unveiled plans last month to change the way it charges to ship bulky packages, effectively increasing prices on more than a third of its U.S. ground shipments.

Instead of charging by weight alone, all FedEx ground packages will be priced according to size, which boosts the priced for delivering items as diverse as diapers, shoes and paper towels. The change in pricing could dramatically affect either online shoppers or retailers or both as one of the parties will have to swallow the estimated hundreds of millions of dollars in extra shipping costs.

With this news, some Wall Street firms finally albeit a bit late jumped on the ICPT bandwagon. Citigroup (C) raised its target to $400, stating that its market cap (at the time $5.4 billion) didn reach the opportunity for these liver disease treatments. They estimated that the OCA could exceed a $5 billion sales level. Oppenheimer (OPY) also raised its target to $360 while Bank of America/Merrill’s (BAC) target is set at $872, the only one not yet exceeded with the most recent move.

With the recent acquisition, financed by the $ 130 billion sale of Verizon Wireless (VZ) in the US, Vodafone adds 1.9 million clients to its customer base in Spain totaling 17.2 million, second to Tel茅fonica (TEF), which counts 24.9 million, and ahead of ORANGE (ORAN), that has 14.4 million customers. According to Antonio Coimbra, Vodafone麓s CEO in Spain, there are strong indicators that favor the acquisition:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

You can see the same trends among many individual European stocks. Telecom giant Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) has big exposure to Latin America, but investors focus on its home country of Spain in limiting its gains. The same trend has affected French oil giant Total (NYSE: TOT  ) , which shares the same exposure to energy projects around the world yet has been tarnished by its proximity to the crisis-ridden continent. By focusing on value rather than perception, you can get some great values when others are being irrational.

  • [By Charles Sizemore]

So, what does this mean for AMX stock and for its largest single competitor in Latin America, SpainTelefonica (TEF)?

To start, this will, by default, massively diversify AMX revenue stream globally. Though AMX is the number-one or number-two mobile provider in nearly every Latin American country, its home market of Mexico is by far its biggest. Mexico currently accounts for about a third of sales and nearly half of profits. The new AMX will be a pan-Latin-American telecom giant based in Mexico rather than a Mexican telecom giant with operations in Central and South America.

  • [By Roger Conrad, Founder and Chief Editor, Capitalist Times]

Roger Conrad: Well, one that I read about actually in the very first issue of Conrad's Utility Investor is a company called Telefonica (TEF). This one is a company that has had a pretty tough several years.

5 Best Bank Stocks To Invest In 2014

The debate over whether the nation's largest banks are too big to fail rages on, as does the question of just how much in implicit subsidies these banks enjoy because of this notion. When it comes to Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) , the two megabanks have been found to be much more dependent on TBTF-generated backstops than peers JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) , particularly when it comes to profits -- which would dip into the negative zone for both B of A and Citi if funding subsidies were removed.

Indirect TBTF support aids debt ratings, too
Not surprisingly, tacit advantages exist when it comes to ratings on the biggest banks' debt, as well. A new report by Bloomberg shows that, without such backup, the debt of Wells and JPMorgan would be much less attractive for investors -- and, for Bank of America and Citi, pretty much its entire debt load would make even the pluckiest of investors run for the hills.

Umpqua (UMPQ) is engaged in the business of commercial and retail banking and the delivery of retail brokerage services. This stock closed up 5% at $17.11 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 2.16 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 686,781

    Volume % Change: 235%

From a technical perspective, UMPQ ripped sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $16.51 with strong upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of UMPQ within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if UMPQ manages to take out Monday's intraday high of $17.46 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $17.48 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UMPQ as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $16.51 or above more near-term support at $16 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 686,781 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then UMPQ will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $20 to $23.

Top Retail Companies For 2014

While Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) already has plans to open two additional Sam’s Club outlets in China in the coming year, its China chief, Greg Foran, said he hopes to increase that rate each year until there are 10 new Sam’s Club stores per year in the next six or so years.

Foran was named president and chief executive of Walmart’s China division in February 2012, as the company contended with increasing competition and China’s ever more Internet-savvy customers. Foran may be feeling the pressure as his honeymoon period comes to an end.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer by sales, hopes to bolster its foothold in China. Local rivals have stepped up their game in the past few years, outpacing Wal-Mart both in sales and in numbers of stores. So far, the Bentonville, Ark., retailer has focused mostly on rolling out Walmart-branded stores. But focusing on Sam’s Club is intended to help offset a traffic decline that has plagued Walmart stores in China for the past several years. Sam’s Club has largely avoided that traffic trend.

Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Janus Capital Group (JNS) -- Up 41 percent last week One of last week's biggest gainers was Janus, soaring on Friday after mutual fund manager Bill Gross announced that he would be leaving Pimco to join Janus. Despite the broad market gains, not every stock was a winner today. Shares of Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL  ) were getting taken to the woodshed, falling 12% after Whitney Tilson, head of the Kase Capital Management hedge fund, announced a short position in the high-flying wood-flooring specialist. At an investor conference, Tilson noted a government investigation into potentially illegal timber imports by Lumber Liquidators, and suggested the company's gross margins, which have improved to better than 40% lately, were too good to be true. The hedge fund manager also cited a report from the non-profit Environmental Investigative Agency that said Lumber Liquidators' purchases "have fueled rampant illegal logging in Eastern Russia." Shares of the flooring retailer had more than doubled this year before today's drop, riding the broader housing recovery.

David Tulis/AP It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. "I'll probably start shopping for me at that point," she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn't sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what's typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. Still, in the April quarter, the weather may play a negative role in Chico's results. Thursday's Range: $3.02-$3.31

    52-Week Range: $0.61-$4.05

    Thursday's Volume: 295,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 570,805

From a technical perspective, ASTC spiked sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $2.96 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last four months, with shares moving higher from its low of 63 cents per share to its recent high of $4.05. During that uptrend, shares of ASTC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technica! l price action. This spike on Thursday is now starting to push shares of ASTC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if ASTC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.50 to $3.75 and then once it takes out its 52-week high at $4.05 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ASTC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $2.66 or above more near-term support at $2.62 and then once it sustain a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 570,805 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ASTC will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets of that breakout are $5 to $5.50.

Top Income Stocks To Own For 2014

LONDON -- I'm looking at some of your favorite FTSE 100 companies and examining how each will deliver their dividends.

Today, I'm putting iconic high street retailerMarks and SpencerGroup (LSE: MKS  ) under the microscope.

Dividend history: cut No. 1
All was rosy with M&S in the mid-1990s. Within its final results for the year ended March 1998, the company was able to toast five-year earnings-per-share growth of 62% and dividend growth of 77%. The 1997-1998 dividend was covered around twice by both adjusted and statutory EPS -- a healthy level of cover, you might think, with little imminent risk to shareholders' income.

However, M&S suffered a terrible second half the following financial year. Profits collapsed, the final dividend was held flat, and the total dividend for the year (14.4 pence) was barely covered by adjusted EPS and uncovered by statutory EPS.

The next year -- 1999-2000 -- profits fell again as a result of restructuring charges. M&S slashed the dividend by 37.5%, the payout representing the entirety of the company's profits for the year.

He told CNBC that he likes to reduce email time and cut out the noise by learning about world markets through symbiotic relationships with friends like Alan Fournier and other billionaires. Every year Bass invites his notable friends to his ranch in Larue, Texas, for a special event called The Barefoot Economic Summit, Texas (BEST). Bass said he learns more in two days of the summit than in two months of emails.
