While Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) already has plans to open two additional Sam’s Club outlets in China in the coming year, its China chief, Greg Foran, said he hopes to increase that rate each year until there are 10 new Sam’s Club stores per year in the next six or so years.
Foran was named president and chief executive of Walmart’s China division in February 2012, as the company contended with increasing competition and China’s ever more Internet-savvy customers. Foran may be feeling the pressure as his honeymoon period comes to an end.
Walmart, the world’s largest retailer by sales, hopes to bolster its foothold in China. Local rivals have stepped up their game in the past few years, outpacing Wal-Mart both in sales and in numbers of stores. So far, the Bentonville, Ark., retailer has focused mostly on rolling out Walmart-branded stores. But focusing on Sam’s Club is intended to help offset a traffic decline that has plagued Walmart stores in China for the past several years. Sam’s Club has largely avoided that traffic trend.

The big gainers inspire us to keep investing. The presence of the decliners keeps our greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Janus Capital Group (JNS) -- Up 41 percent last week One of last week's biggest gainers was Janus, soaring on Friday after mutual fund manager Bill Gross announced that he would be leaving Pimco to join Janus. It's a big deal for Gross, who managed to grow Pimco's Total Return Fund to $222 billion in assets under management over the past 43 years. Despite the broad market gains, not every stock was a winner today. Shares of Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL ) were getting taken to the woodshed, falling 12% after Whitney Tilson, head of the Kase Capital Management hedge fund, announced a short position in the high-flying wood-flooring specialist. At an investor conference, Tilson noted a government investigation into potentially illegal timber imports by Lumber Liquidators, and suggested the company's gross margins, which have improved to better than 40% lately, were too good to be true. The hedge fund manager also cited a report from the non-profit Environmental Investigative Agency that said Lumber Liquidators' purchases "have fueled rampant illegal logging in Eastern Russia." Shares of the flooring retailer had more than doubled this year before today's drop, riding the broader housing recovery.

David Tulis/AP It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. "I'll probably start shopping for me at that point," she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn't sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what's typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. Still, in the April quarter, the weather may play a negative role in Chico's results. Rival Ann (NYSE: ANN ) , which runs Ann Taylor, said earlier this month that it had to increase discounts at its Loft stores, as a cold spring made customers less willing to buy warm-weather clothing. Yet Gap (NYSE: GPS ) managed to overcome the weather to post 7% higher comps in April, continuing the positive momentum that has helped Gap make a solid turnaround over the past several years. With broader appeal, Chico's can hope that it's following in Gap's shoes with its own turnaround.
