Parsippany, N.J.-based B&G Foods (NYSE: BGS  ) is taking control of Robert's American Gourmet Food, LLC -- the company that does business as "Pirate Brands" and whose signature product is probably the Pirate Booty corn puffs snack.

  • [By Daniela Pylypczak]

B&G Foods (BGS) released its third quarter results on Thursday after the closing bell.

The company reported earnings of 35 cents for the third quarter, slightly below analyst expectations of 40 cents. Revenues were reported at $181.4 million, below estimates of $184.83 million. From a year prior, B&G did see net sales increase 17.6%, though net income decreased 9.2% due to losses on extinguishment of debt, and acquisition-related transaction costs of $3.4 million.

Commenting on the company’s performance, CEO David L. Wenner stated “Our business saw continued strong growth in net sales, net income and adjusted EBITDA during the third quarter. Putting acquisition growth aside, our base business net sales followed industry trends and declined for the quarter. Given current trends in the packaged foods industry, we expect growth in our base business to be challenging during the fourth quarter of 2013.”

B&G Foods shares traded 0.43% higher during Thursday’s session. Year-to-date, the stock is up 26.59%.

More than a handful of small dividend-paying companies had strong performances over the past year. B&G Foods (NYSE: BGS  ) surged 35% and recently yielded 3.4%. The company has faced rising food costs in recent years and has also been a savvy acquirer. (A recent buy is Pirate Brands, maker of Pirate's Booty snacks.) Its brands include Ortega, Mrs. Dash, Cream of Wheat, Underwood, Molly McButter, Baker's Joy, and Static Guard. There's some worry, though, about how well it can grow organically, without relying on acquisitions. B&G has carried significant debt, but it has refinanced and reduced that.

If you're a trader, you try to catch these ups and downs. If you're a longer term trader, you sort of go with Japanese equities. The one that I've got in Jubak's Picks is Toyota Motor, (TM), which trades in New York as an ADR. You can also go with something like Torre Industries (TRYIF), which trades as an ADR in New York as well as on the Tokyo exchange. They're the world's largest maker of carbon fiber, good play on exports to the aircraft and car industries. Or you can do something like Seven & I (SVNDY), the Japanese company that owns 7-Elevens around the world. So, those would be my ways to play a weak yen if you want to use Japanese equities for the week and the year ahead.

In terms of growth, Asia is where the company is achieving its greatest success. Operating joint ventures in China, India and Japan, Aegon’s gross deposits in new markets grew 31% in fiscal 2013 to $19.8 billion. Its underlying earnings before tax have grown 28% over the last two fiscal years, with fee-based earnings representing a much bigger part of its business than in the past. That a good thing, because fee-based earnings don have nearly the same bite if things go south than assets on your own balance sheet. Its operations outside of Europe are getting stronger, providing the diversification necessary to survive financial hiccups. As far as insurers go, AEG is one of the best cheap stocks worth owning.

Cheap Stocks to Buy: Cencosud S.A. (CNCO)

Cencosud is one of the largest retailers in Latin America. It operates grocery stores, home improvement stores and department stores in five countries including Chile, its home base. Its stock is down 51% over the past year for several reasons, including a deal falling through that would have seen it sell 51% of its credit card operations in Chile and Argentina to Itau Unibanco (ITUB) and using the proceeds to reduce its heavy debt load. Add to that a major devaluation of the peso in Argentina, where it generates a quarter of its overall revenue, and you have investors in a full-on panic.

We're talking about big dollars. Fonterra, for example, collects 89% of all milk produced in New Zealand and dairy sales account for 25% of all of New Zealand's exports. Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) currently holds 25% of the market share in packaged coffee, and is now making a very ambitious push further into this space with the release of its Verismo home coffee machines. In this video, Motley Fool consumer goods analyst Blake Bos takes a look at Starbucks' machine compared to the Nespresso machine from Nestle (NASDAQOTH: NSRGY  ) . By and large, youe going to get a better selection of Emerging Markets Lite stocks in Europe. Want a few examples? How about consumer products and food giants Unilever (UL) and Nestle (NSRGY)? Both are stable performers with long histories of paying and raising their dividends. And both have monster presences in emerging markets. Unilever gets nearly 60% of its revenues from emerging markets, and while that has hurt the company this past quarter, it ensures that it has a bright future. Nestle gets more than 40% of its revenues from emerging markets.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

Bought out earlier this year from SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU  ) by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, Albertsons has decided to forgo compiling individual customer shopping habits through loyalty cards at all of its brands, including Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's/Star Market, and its namesake stores. Shoppers might not be aware of the treasure trove of data contained in those plastic store cards you swipe at the beginning of your checkout procedure, but they're a marketer's dream.

Looking ahead, though, future growth seems limited, given management's plans to continue consolidating its network.Indeed, the company intends to use the proceeds from the pending sale of its Canadian operations to pay down related debt and repurchase a significant portion of its shares. As such, Safeway seems to be in the same mind-set as fellow regional competitor SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU  ) , which has been going through its own business rightsizing process.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Down, down, down Supervalu (SVU) goes and where it stops, no one knows. Not even Goldman Sachs, which cut Supervalu’s shares to Sell from Neutral, though it does have a guess.

Goldman Sachs analysts Stephen Grambling and Christopher Prykull explain their thinking:

SVU shares are up 183% year-to-date (vs. S&P 500 +26%) as management initiatives have slowed the top-line deterioration at the company retail banners and Save-A-Lot. As the market has started to factor in stable-to-improving EBITDA on a highly levered equity base, the stock has re-rated from 4.5X EV/EBITDA to 6.1X EV/EBITDA. With the shares now trading above the historical average and roughly in line with peers, we expect future downward revisions to consensus estimates will likely drive a rerating of the shares to a more normalized level.

While we have been encouraged by the new management team success in effecting change, we believe cuts to food stamps (SNAP benefits), potential reductions to the transition service agreement, and encroaching competition will likely overwhelm operational improvements…

Shares of Supervalu have dropped 8.3% to $6.31 at 2:59 p.m., within spitting distance of Goldman’s $6 target price, while competitors Family Dollar Stores (FDO) has gained 0.2% to $70.16,Dollar General(DG) has fallen 0.4% t0 $59.02,Dollar Tree (DLTR) is off 1% to $59.33 and Wal-Mart (WMT) is little changed at $79.19.
