NEW YORK (CNNMoney) A week of records in the markets could end with a whimper, with investor sentiment struggling to recover after taking a big hit Wednesday.Declining Treasury yields, disappointing quarterly earnings from Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) and a broad sense of fear in the markets has contributed to pushing stocks down.
U.S. stock futures were dipping lower Friday. The major indexes are just below their closing levels from a week ago, a dramatic turnaround from Tuesday when they were hitting new record highs.
Wall Street is now waiting for the U.S. government to publish housing starts and building permit numbers from April at 8:30 a.m. ET. The monthly Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index comes out at 9:55 a.m. ET.

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japan's Nikkei Average (JP:NIK) traded 0.5% higher in the early minutes Tuesday, extending the previous day's 0.9% advance, with the market getting some support from overnight gains for U.S. shares and a slightly weaker yen (dollar at 楼101.56 vs. 楼101.40 at Monday's open). The Xbox has to fend off competition from both Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and Nintendo. The new Sony PlayStation 4 has done relatively well. Nintendo’s Wii U sales have been crushed. However, Microsoft can reasonably claim it is the leading maker of game consoles in the world. And the Xbox finally has the chance to be the Trojan horse that Ballmer wanted it to be. Another factor to take into account is weighing the extra two years of college costs versus an extra two years of wages. According to College Reality Check, the net price for a bachelor's degree at�Bridgepoint Education's (NYSE: BPI ) Ashford University is about $17,300, only about $1,000 less than the cost of Harvard. Earlier this week, Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI ) revealed that the Western Association of Schools and Colleges had approved the company's Ashford University application for accreditation for five years. Investors had been concerned about this accreditation issue for the last year or so, and shares jumped on the news. They're now up about 50% from where my Special Situations portfolio bought in late April.
