Top Construction Companies To Invest In 2014

Reading the Federal Reserve's new Beige Book, one thing jumps out of the 65 pages of mostly beige prose: The word "strong" is showing up a lot, and in places where it counts most.

The Beige Book seemingly makes a point of describing the overall pace of growth as "modest to moderate'' words it repeats in the new edition, and which veteran Fed watchers can recite in their sleep. But "strong," "stronger" or `strongest" appear at least 69 times in today's version often describing areas of the economy that will make or break hopes for faster expansion next year.

BEIGE BOOK: Fed survey finds broad but modest improvement

Take housing. Multifamily construction part of a volatile but critical housing sector that is still building homes at less than half of the pre-recession pace is described as "strong.''

But again, the most glaring red flag is the valuation of GOOG stock. Shares of Google stock are currently trading at a P/E ratio of 30, which is certainly rich. Consider thatApple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSTF) sport multiples of only about 14. These companies also have decent dividend yields.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Mike Arnold]

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.

Advisors' Opinion:

It has been almost as silly in the other direction, too. Traders knocked billions off the market cap of Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) after the company actually reported a 44% improvement in earnings. AndTeradata (TDC) saw its corporate value trimmed by something like $1.5 billion after the company lowered its forecast.

  • [By Louis Navellier]

Stanley Black and Decker (SWK) shares have had a nice year and have been red hot in the last quarter. The stock has jumped ahead by about 18% in the last three months, bringing the year to date return up to 22%. However, earnings this year are down compared to 2012, and consumer spending is losing steam at the same time the housing recovery is stalling. The stock was downgraded to a “D” ranking in Portfolio Grader this week and will remain a “sell” until fundamentals improve to match the story.
