David Goldman/AP WASHINGTON -- U.S. job openings and overall hiring both reached five-year highs in September, signaling steady improvement in the job market. Job postings rose 69,000 to a seasonally adjusted 3.9 million, the Labor Department said Friday. That's the most since March 2008, just a few months after the Great Recession began. It's also close to the roughly 4 million job openings each month that are consistent with healthier job markets. Total hiring increased 26,000 to 4.6 million, the highest level since August 2008. The gain suggests employers are not only posting more jobs but are also taking greater steps to fill them. September's total hiring is still below the roughly 5 million people who are typically hired in sturdier job markets. The number of people who quit their jobs in September fell from August but was still about 15 percent higher than a year earlier. People usually quit their jobs when they have another one lined up, or when they are certain they can find one. More quits is a sign of confidence in the job market. The growth in hiring, job openings and quits points to more movement in the job market, which can create opportunities for those out of work or who are looking for another job. It also shows that competition for jobs is easing. There were 2.88 unemployed people, on average, for each available job in September. That's the lowest since August 2008 and down from 7 to 1 in July 2009, just after the recession ended. In a healthy economy, the ratio is usually about 2 to 1. Unemployment is still high at 7.3 percent. But other reports suggest the job market is healing. Earlier this month, the government's October employment report said the economy added an average of 202,000 jobs a month from August through October. That's up sharply from an average of 146,000 in May through July. Those figures reflect net payroll gains, which are the total number of people hired minus those who were laid off, quit or retired. The net gain can increase just because fewer workers are laid off, even if hiring is flat. Friday's report on job openings and turnover provides more details than the monthly employment report. It was encouraging because it shows those job gains are increasing because of more hiring. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen, who has been nominated to replace him next year, have both cited greater overall hiring and quits as key signs of job market improvement.

IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG )
Canadian gold miner IAMGOLD pays a semiannual dividend of $0.125 per share, which equates to a current yield of about 4.45%. As the company's name would imply, its revenues are generated by its gold-mining operations. Currently, the company has six gold mines across three continents as well as several potential projects in the works. The company's current priorities given the slumping gold market include cash preservation, cost reduction, and disciplined capital allocation. While the dividend looks safe for now, given the company's stated policy of not jeopardizing is strong balance sheet, it could be reduced if gold prices fall further. - [By Ben Levisohn]
As a result, Chidley and team upgraded Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) andYamana Gold (AUY) to Neutral from Underweight, and raised Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Iamgold (IAG) to Overweight from Neutral.Gold Fields (GFI) was downgraded “due to increased risk and also reduced expectations for the South Deep operation,” Chidley says.

On that theory, hard-hit energy stocks that have suffered from the crash in oil prices could stand to benefit. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR ) , for instance, lost more than half its value in the last four months of 2014 as the exploration and production company with a huge stake in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota suffered from worries about the sustainability of its long-term growth in light of falling oil. Similarly, many small-cap gold and silver miners struggled through a poor 2014, and so companies like First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG ) and IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG ) arguably have more to gain from a January bounce.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Direxion Daily Gold Miners Bull 3x fell 10%, as the Fed minutes prompted a $30-per-ounce drop in the price of gold. For mining stocks, gold's poor performance earlier this year was already enough to create problems, with even major producers Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX ) and Goldcorp (NYSE: GG ) suspending operations or exploration efforts at key properties due to poor market conditions. Precious-metals investors have worried that higher interest rates resulting from the Fed's easing back from its bond purchases could draw investors away from gold, and the leveraged Direxion ETF's performance only magnifies the impact of gold's drop had today.

There is also a need for diversification in an investment portfolio that gold and silver holdings provide for a family office. It is a classic hedge against economic turmoil. Companies in the sector range from Goldcorp (NYSE: GG), the world's biggest, to Wishbone Gold, a small cap with promising holdings in Australia. If dividend income is desired by the family office, there is Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY), a favorite of financial columnist Jim Jubak, that has a 2.80 percent yield. Goldcorp has a dividend of around 2.50 percent, with Newmont Mining's (NYSE: NEM) even higher at nearly three percent.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS )
It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone.

AngloGold Ashanti Limited, formerly known as Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited, was founded in 1944 and is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
I think the answer to this is yes, but it's definitely going to need some help from gold spot prices, and it'll need to formulate solidly structured contracts with its labor force in Africa. Last year, AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU ) was forced to come to a pay raise agreement with some 10,000 striking workers, after a strike that completely closed its TauTona and Mponeng mines for months. AngloGold understands that higher labor costs are never welcomed from a business perspective, but the alternative of mine closures is even worse.

During the year, we exited more holdings than we added, making the portfolio more concentrated. The exits were driven by the inability of newer positions to meet our milestones. The business environment in many parts of Asia has been difficult for the past few years, reflective of tougher lending conditions, and a moderation in growth. All this has translated into lower returns on equity (ROE) for many companies, and is one of the key reasons behind Asia underperformance relative to many other parts of the world. Some of the decline in ROE is likely structural, as may be the case for the industrial sector in China. However, we also believe that with stabilizing sales growth and lower inputs costs, there is a possibility that margins may stabilize and start to recover over the next few years.
