Top 5 Regional Bank Stocks To Buy Right Now

Source: ThinkstockIn our previous looks at big bank stocks going into the new year, the two that appear to be best positioned for growth were Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM). The analysts at Sterne Agee have reached the same conclusion regarding big banks, and the analysts have also taken a closer look at regional and multinational banks.

Here their conclusion:

Asset-sensitive regional banks provided the catalyst for the sector outperformance in ’13. However, as we enter 4, we see few catalysts to drive sector performance meaningfully higher as earnings expectations slow dramatically to a mid single-digit pace. No doubt, the operating environment remains challenging, but as the economy continues to grind forward, our sense is the banking sector stands to post further, albeit modest gains in 4.

Advisors' Opinion:

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: REGN  ) , which was one of yesterday's 3 Best Stocks, slipped 4.7%, giving up all of Tuesday's gains and a little bit more. Today's slip may just be a reflection of investors' taking their gains from yesterday's surge, but it could also signal the exit of some longer-term investors spooked by the Fed's comments today. Though it's often not a good idea, people often sell off the winners in their portfolio first, holding on to the losers in hopes for a comeback. And most longer-term investors in Regeneron are winners -- the stock's up nearly 850% in the past three years alone.

You hardly know biotech Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) reported a mixed first quarter this morning. Although the stock is down now, shares popped earlier, trading up as much as 1.8% around 10:30 a.m. before simmering down.

For the period ended March 31, Regeneron reported earnings of $2.26 a share or $263 million, up from $1.78 or $201 million year-over-year. Revenue rose to $626 million compared to $440 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters most recently forecast earnings of $2.20 a share, on sales of $610 million. The big downer: Disappointing sales of Regeneron’s eye treatment, Eylea.

Citigroup analyst Yaron Werber, however, calls the weak sales a temporary setback and considers weakness in Regeneron a buying opportunity. He explains why:

Eylea sales were a miss at $356 million versus our $409 million and Consensus $404 million, impacted by a decrease in distributor inventory and typically weak first quarter. Unit demand for Eylea grew by 25% year-over-year excluding inventory. The guidance was re-affirmed and we expect sales to bounce back in the second quarter and benefit from DME approval in the third quarter of 2014…This quarter was anticipated to be weak and any weakness in the stock provides an entry point ahead of a robust year of data for Alirocumab and dupilumab, ongoing strong ex-US launch of Eylea and expected approval in DME in the US by August 18th.

Shares of Regeneron have dropped 1.7% to $281.81 at 3:116 p.m. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) has fallen 2% to $222.94, while the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) has slid 3.8% to $120.

Ie long been a fan of Regeneron (REGN), and have recommended it in recent years to my own investment newsletter subscribers. The company shares have risen by roughly 70% in the past year, besting the market and pacing the 66% rise in 2013 for the biotech sector. At a recent $290 a share, REGN should outperform the market in the near term, rising double digits to the mid $300 level.

Valuation: Even with after the Expedia stock sell-off, shares of EXPE remain far from cheap. EXPE stock is trading for a trailing P/E of 46 vs. 33 for Priceline and 23 for Travelzoo (TZOO).And considering the recent volatility, investors are certainly jittery about EXPE stock. As a result, another earnings disappointment could have a severe impact.

The Q1 2014 Tripadvisor Inc (NASDAQ: TRIP) earnings report is due after the market closes on Tuesday, May 6th, with investors and traders alike who follow either the stock or large cap Priceline Group Inc (NASDAQ: PCLN), mid cap Expedia Inc (NASDAQ: EXPE) and small caps Travelzoo Inc (NASDAQ: TZOO) and Orbitz Worldwide, Inc (NYSE: OWW) should be paying attention to it. Aside from the Tripadvisor Inc earnings report, it should be said that Travelzoo Inc released 1Q 2014 earnings on April 17th and Expedia Inc released earnings last Thursday while the Q1 2014 Orbitz Worldwide earnings report is due today before the market opens and the Priceline Group Inc earnings report is due out on Thursday, May 8, at 9:30AM EDT. However, Tripadvisor Inc is a little different from these other travel booking companies as its main focus is to provide travel advice or reviews written by real travelers (which obviously leads to travel bookings that they make money on).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jim Jubak]

One place to look for it this week has been in the ADRs, the New York traded ADRs, American Depository Receipts of GOL. One of the two big Brazilian airlines is the only one that is not owned by somebody else. The symbol is (GOL). It went up like 9.5% on October 21; it went up about 4.5% on October 22, pulled back a tiny little bit on October 23, but still a major, major move. This is basically on the effect of a weaker dollar versus the Brazilian real, since GOL is basically a domestic airline and almost all their revenue is denominated in real, which means that when the real gets cheap against the dollar, it hurts their revenue, especially because most of their costs, a lot of their costs, probably about 80% of their costs are denominated in dollars. A strong dollar means what they pay for oil, kerosene, jet fuel, what they pay for debt service, what they pay on airplane leases, all denominated in dollars, goes up, so GOL has been getting hammered on this. The reversal of this is a big deal for the stock.
