Best Asian Companies For 2014

For some 30 years, Ohmae Kenichi (known abroad in the Westernized surname-given name inversion) has been among the most importantnd most authoritativehinkers and commentators on Japanese business and political economy.

Ohmae, now 70, is best known for having led McKinsey Japanese and Asian management consulting business from 1972 to 1995 (before that, graduating from Waseda University, and earning a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from MIT). In 1995, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Tokyo. Since then, he has pursued a number of academic ventures while writing books and serving on Japanese government advisory panels.

In 2011, Ohmae led a panel that produced for the government a report entitled hat Should We Learn from the Severe Accident at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant.(His view is that there can be no blanket decision to restart the shutdown plants. Each plant must be cleared for restart individually through strict verification of ailsafesystems, requiring both redundancy and alternative sources for cooling the reactors upon any accident, malfunction, or disaster.  He also thinks for largely technical reasons the whole nuclear sector must be nationalized.)

Rofin-Sinar (NASDAQ: RSTI  ) , Coherent (NASDAQ: COHR  ) , Newport (NASDAQ: NEWP  ) , and JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) all offer fiber-optic lasers as well.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Shares of fiber optic company JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) shot higher by 8.4%, led by peer Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN  ) , which surged after it topped Wall Street's expectations in the second quarter and forecast third-quarter revenue well above the consensus. What's really noteworthy about Ciena's quarter was that the majority of revenue growth came from the U.S., not overseas. This speaks to what I've been saying for months about the next cycle of infrastructure growth trickling down from service providers like AT&Tdown to fiber optic companies like JDS Uniphase, and into individual networking parts providers. We are witnessing the next boom in infrastructure spending, and I don't feel it's anywhere near too late to still get in on the gains.

  • [By Anders Bylund]

Close competitor NeoPhotonics (NYSE: NPTN  ) soared 15% higher. Larger rival JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) jumped 7.9% to become the fastest gainer on the S&P 500. If Ciena can beat its own expectations in selling Internet backbone equipment to a bevy of major telecoms, its chief rivals must eventually follow suit. JDS is only one month removed from its latest quarterly report, which sent shares diving 7% overnight (but all was forgiven a week later). NeoPhotonics also reported in early May, but didn't make any waves then.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But recent good news from Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN  ) has Finisar investors looking for better times ahead. Earlier this month, Ciena's stock jumped 17% after the company reported a 6% increase in sales, pointing to a revival in spending on network infrastructure. Comments from Ciena CEO Gary Smith suggest strength not just for his own company but also for the industry as a whole, and that sent both Finisar and larger rival JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) higher on the news. JDS Uniphase issued a fairly weak earnings and outlook early last month, needing to temper expectations for a revival in its own sales during the current quarter. As a result, Ciena's news came as a pleasant surprise for the industry, and with Finisar counting Ciena as a customer, Ciena's success reflects directly on Finisar.

JH: One of the areas where the U.S. for decades has been the leading technological power is in small nuclear reactors. We've used them on our aircraft carriers and on our nuclear submarines safely and efficiently. The U.S. has an advantage in understanding small modular nuclear reactors. One of the companies that we have followed for a long time that's working on that is Babcock & Wilcox Co. (BWC). There's also Fluor Corp. (FLR), which is working on small modular nuclear reactors. President Obama and the Department of Energy are funding research on the implementation of small modular nuclear reactors.
